Does controversey in fashion sell?

hat

Just heard that Princess Beatrices ‘hat’ / ‘fascinator’ sold for £81k, almost 4 times the price of Kate Middletons wedding dress. Given that there was so much controversy over whether it was a fashion faus paux and looked terrible this has done nothing but ramp up the publicity for the designer, Philip Treacy, and the bidding. I think this really supports the adage that controversy sells, how many other items of fashion can increase in value over 160 times for not being received well. Or is there something that the general public is missing and actually it’s a work of art that’s ahead of its time. No doubt we will see more extravagant items in years to come. At least the one good thing to come from this is that the money raised will go to a good cause (Unicef and Children in Crisis).

Maybe Banksy or not?

So there I am driving down Holloway road in North London when I see this tall stranger on the wall staring at me, I look again and realise it’s a painting. The first thing that crossed my mind, is that a Banksy? For those of you who are unfamiliar with the work of the illusive Banksy, he’s an urban artist who leaves images delicately spray painted all over the world, from cool things that look surreal to, everyday things with a twist to political statements. Of course once one person does that everyone wants to do it, and it becomes difficult to know what you are looking at. It’s strange how a simple set of shapes can from a distance look realistic and make you do a double take, but I guess that the beauty of it. Did I see a Banksy? Maybe or then again maybe not?
