UpCycling or ReCycling?

UpCycling, taking used materials and creating new ‘better’ things with them seems to be all the rage at the moment, it even made its way on the ‘Apprentice’  a few weeks back. In principle it makes sense, take a used tire and turn it into wallet, take the good bits from many shirts and create a new patch work shirt. I’m a bit sceptical as to whether it is a real sustainability concept or just another fashion fad, and we should concentrate or more sound sustainability ideas such as recycling and reducing the amount of materials that go into products in the first place, and reducing the amount of miles materials travel.

I don’t know how other people feel about the concept as well, are people going to be happy to wear, what are effectively used, items. The other thing that I am seeing is that rather than UpCycled items being cheaper they actually seem to be more expensive, that may be a reflection of the additional effort required to get the item created, so that may well put people off. As a whole the idea sounds great but I’m a bit unsure….as ever if you’ve got comments you know what to do.
